Use Case: Clean-up of the Bali region
Within Eyes on Plastic, the Sea Cleaners cooperate through their international scientific board: They allow validation of the technical side of the system. Moreover, this is a partner on the ground with local teams, dealing with plastic pollution on a day-to-day basis. Eyes on Plastic will provide an interesting technological solution to detect plastics for making missions of collecting vessels as efficient as possible. Data from The Sea Cleaners will contribute to the pre-operational services by engaging a team in Indonesia and in Europe in the validation of the technology.
Action
The Sea Cleaner’s first collecting vessel, the Mobula 8 was inaugurated in March 2023 in Bali, and the data it collects will be an asset for this demonstration study. The multi-purpose boat covers an area of 15 000 m²/hour, up to 40 cm below the surface and a solid waste storage capacity of 8m³. Data for Eyes on Plastic will also enrich MAPP (Mobula against Plastic Pollution), a global programme including waste collection and management, awareness raising and training of local communities, technical assistance to improve the value chain and research.
About The Sea Cleaners (TSC)
TSC are a globally active NGO, rooting from France. Renowned for their collection of aquatic plastic litter from boats, they act worldwide against plastic pollution of our oceans. For this purpose, they engage in awareness raising, scientific studies, unite volunteers and professionals, collaborate with local institutions and use collecting vessels – the Mobula technology – for plastic removal.
