Use Case: Cleaning in the Jakarta region

In one of the areas with the highest pollution in Indonesia, the industrial metropolis of Bekasi, southeast of Jakarta’s center, has about 2.9 million inhabitants (2018). The Bantar Gebang is Indonesia’s largest dump, whereto most of the waste has been brought from Jakarta since the early 1990s. Furthermore, the Citarum flows in the surrounding area. This supposedly “world’s dirtiest river” is mainly contaminated by chemicals from textile factories, but also by household waste and other waste. Since there is no regulated waste system or running water, the river has become both: a water source for the residents and a waste dump.

Action

OEOO started a joint river cleaning project in the city of Bekasi in Java/Indonesia in 2021. Within Eyes on Plastic, they share the lessons learned in this project on the Bekasi River as well as live data streams from a camera installed on the roof of the SeeHamster. OEOO will receive the AI-based analytics of the camera stream to support their waste sorting. Ideally, ideally Eyes on Plastic can also help to forecast larger plastic amounts by upstream monitoring. In total, the data is expected to improve the efficiency of OEOO’s cleaning activities by providing more insights into litter quality and quantity as well as into litter sources and streams.
