The Sea Cleaners
This NGO takes action worldwide against plastic pollution of our oceans. They engage in awareness raising, scientific studies, unite volunteers and professionals and use collecting vessels for plastic removal. Within Eyes on Plastic, the Sea Cleaners play a crucial role: They allow validation of the technical side of the system. Moreover, this is a partner on the ground with local teams and government, dealing with plastic pollution on a day-to-day basis.
One Earth One Ocean
With its “marine litter cleanup” concept the NGO One Earth One Ocean pursues the aim of freeing waters from plastic, oil and chemicals globally. Within Eyes on Plastic, OEOO shares the lessons learned of a river cleaning project 2021 on the Bekasi River in the city of Bekasi in Java/Indonesia. In the course of the project, the NGO wishes to benefit by insights on quality and streams of aquatic waste.
Comune di Genova
In January 2022, Enel, ESA and Genoa Municipality have agreed to cooperate on learning space applications to accelerate green innovation. The signatories’ common goals are accelerating green innovation, targeting circular and blue economies and supporting city transformation. As their first project, the three partners focus on new solutions for a plastic-free society.
Genova will be the final port of this year’s Ocean Race. On this occasion, the community will engage in citizen science projects in favour of marine protection.
The Ocean Race
This international sailing event will have its exciting finish in the Italian city of Genoa. The organisers and the host cities are cooperating with industry partners, NGOs, science institutios and ESA to make the event more sustainable in many ways.
Therefore, participants and sponsors as well as the great public are engaging in science, learning, sustainable sports and policy making. For instance, the sailing teams are collecting marine data for scientific purposes to learn more about plastic pollution and global warming.
EOMAP
When it comes to satellite–based information on coastal and inland waters, EOMAP has become one of the premier providers. As a spin–off of the German Aerospace Agency (DLR) the team helps clients worldwide to map shallow waters and seafloor or to monitor water quality monitoring. Hydrographic officers, water managers, but also environmental consultants rely on these geospatial services. The target: Simple access to reliable data on aquatic environments.
By the new Eyes-on-Plastic-App, EOMAP joins forces with NGOs and industry partners to advance plastic detection in river systems and coastal waters. We thus enable a knowledge–based decision making.
We look forward to the cooperation with Eyes on Plastic and expect interesting outcomes: In particular, more insights in the quality and streams of litter on the Bekasi River. The data collected shall help to increase the efficiency of our collecting vessels and to thus optimize our cleaning actions.
“I am interested in technological solutions provided to detect plastics, so our collecting vessels are as efficient as possible in their missions. Our interest also lies in contributing to the pre-operational services by using our team in Indonesia and in Europe in the validation of the technology. Our first collecting vessel, the Mobula 8 in Bali will be an asset for this demonstration study.”
“For our clean-up-project in the metropolitan region Jakarta we use floating barriers to drive aquatic litter on to a conveyor belt and relieve the river from about 500 kg waste each day. With Eyes on Plastic we wish to monitor this polluted hotspot continuously and generate data about the amount of waste. The target is to evaluate the efficiency of our barriers and our collection solution.
